Sweden: record high notified area of final felling in the north

In April 2018, in the Northern Sweden, notified area of final felling reached the highest level in ten years. The increase was 89% year-on-year, Swedish Forest Agency's latest monthly statistics.

The increase in the notified area of final felling during the first months of the year in the north continues to rise. In the first four months of the year, the increase was 36% in Northern Sweden, compared with the total of whole country, which was only 4%.

In the April statistics there are several peaks with increases that are the largest since 2007. In Norrbottens county, the notified area of final felling increased by 79% compared to April 2017, in Västerbottens county it increased by 98% and in Västmanlands county the notified area of final felling more than doubled.

At the same time, there are major differences between the north and the south, where there is now a slowdown in all regions of Sweden except for Northern Sweden (Norra Norrland). In the south of Northern Sweden (Södra Norrland), the decline was 24%, in Central Sweden (Svealand) the decline was 3% and in the south of Sweden (Götaland) the decline was 6% year-on-year.

In total, the notified area of final felling increased in April by 5% to 15,373 hectares compared to the corresponding month of the last year.

On the county level, notified areas of final felling decreased in 10 of 21 counties. The largest decrease was 55% in Gävleborgs county followed by Dalarna County by 43% and Blekinge County by 33%.
