Building permits in Germany rise slightly in January-April 2018

From January to April 2018, the construction of a total of 107,300 apartments was approved in Germany. This includes all permits for construction of newly built and existing residential and non-residential buildings. As the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further informs, 0.7% or 700 building permits of apartments were more than in the same period of the previous year. Excluding housing in dormitories, the number of building permits increased by 2.8%.

In the first four months of 2018, the number of building permits for new apartment blocks has increased by 5.0%. In contrast, the number of building permits for new single-family homes has fallen by 0.5% and for new two-family houses by 1.7%. The number of new housing permits for dormitories has fallen sharply (-32.9%).

The number of dwellings due to approved conversion and extension work on existing buildings increased by 3.1% in the first four months of 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year.

From January to April 2018, the volume of new non-residential buildings approved increased by 7.8 million m3 to 71.7 million m3 (+ 12.3%). The increase was attributable to both the public builders (+2.0 million m3 and +38.3%) and the non-public builders (+5.9 million m3 and +10.0%).
